To the south of Kefalonia a ferry line and an island which is being described are suiting Zante Zakynthos. Practically these are two names of the same, interchangeably be or used altogether. It has wonderful beaches, the interesting capital city, that is also Zakynthos, what has been written in previous articles about.
At the same time this island still has one curiosity that is, it is main on the Mediterranean sea with place of nesting of sea turtle Caretta caretta. These turtle live in the Laganas Bay for millennia. For sixties of the 20th century when much here the tourism developed, they had to compete with people. First of all the competition concerned and still concerns places on sands where the turtle laid eggs. Admittedly these turtle were supposed to fold the custom eggs in places also most attractive for tourists.
At the moment through pressures from the side of the environmental protection, steps were taken to the purpose of the preservation of these turtle. At present even tourists already understood that turtle are also one of tourist attractions and at the same time peculiarly they are caring about the local beautiful landscape. Beaches are stretching out here along the entire Laganas bay and their view is simply uncanny, making breathing difficult. Next very Laganas is loud although it also has its merits.
Zante Zakynthos is also known from it poet and for the author of their anthem, Dionizjos Solomos. He was born in Zakynthos and a place is located in a museum to his memory, as well as splinter of wood growing in the nearby park Strani. Under it as if the tree supposedly in 1823 “Ode to the freedom” got up, which Solomos was an author for. The part of this ode was used as words for the Greek of the national anthem, the so-called “Hymn to the freedom”, which was first local anthem, and which is applying till present times to.
